Explore Maths at Harrow

Our Maths Explorers summer courses at Harrow give students aged 9–10 and 11–12 the opportunity to spend a week exploring mathematical ideas, patterns and problem-solving as part of an Atlas Summer Courses summer experience.

Mathematics is about more than performing calculations or remembering formulas. It involves recognising patterns, thinking logically, making connections and finding ways to approach problems that may not have an immediately obvious solution.

Maths Explorers encourages students to investigate mathematical questions with curiosity and confidence. They'll be challenged to consider different approaches, explain why a solution works and discover how mathematical ideas can be used to understand problems in new ways.

Across the course, the emphasis is not simply on reaching the correct answer. Students will also be encouraged to think about the process they used to get there, compare different methods and learn from approaches suggested by other students.

Outside their academic sessions, students will experience the wider programme alongside other young learners, combining their Maths course with the social and activity elements of their Atlas Summer Courses summer at Harrow.

What Will Students Study on a Maths Explorers Summer Course at Harrow?

There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors shape their lessons around their expertise while ensuring activities and mathematical challenges are appropriate for the age and learning needs of the students in their group.

Depending on the tutor and age group, students could explore different areas of mathematics, potentially including numbers, patterns, geometry, logic, probability and mathematical problem-solving.

They might consider questions such as:

  • How can recognising a pattern help us solve a problem?
  • Can the same mathematical problem be solved in different ways?
  • How can we use logic to work out what must be true?
  • What can shapes and geometry tell us about the world around us?
  • How can mathematics help us understand chance and probability?
  • How can a complicated problem be broken into smaller steps?
  • How can we explain why a mathematical solution works rather than simply giving an answer?

The depth and approach will reflect whether students are aged 9–10 or 11–12, as well as the tutor's expertise and the interests of the group.

Any syllabus shown on our website is an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact mathematical concepts, problems or activities students will explore.

How Students Will Learn on Maths Explorers

Maths Explorers is designed to make mathematical learning active, enjoyable and accessible for younger students.

Ages 9–10 and 11–12

12 hours of small-group lessons
Across the week, students will take part in 12 hours of lessons designed to get them thinking, questioning and solving problems in a fun and interactive way.

Lessons follow a routine of review, learning and application, helping students build their understanding before applying new ideas to mathematical problems and challenges. Tutors will seek to involve everyone and encourage students to explain not only what they think the answer is, but how they reached it.

Activities and stimuli will be age-appropriate and could include mathematical puzzles, logic problems, pattern investigations, games, collaborative challenges and opportunities to apply mathematical ideas to unfamiliar situations.

Throughout the week, students will be encouraged to experiment with different approaches, learn from mistakes and become more comfortable tackling problems where the solution may not be immediately clear. There will be opportunities to work independently as well as collaboratively with other students.

Actual course content will vary depending on the expertise of the individual tutor.

Who Are Our Maths Explorers Summer Courses at Harrow For?

Our Maths Explorers summer courses at Harrow are designed for students aged 9–10 and 11–12 who enjoy numbers, patterns, puzzles and finding solutions to challenging problems.

Students don't need to be the fastest at calculations or already consider themselves particularly strong mathematicians. The course may appeal just as much to young learners who enjoy asking questions, spotting patterns, solving puzzles or discovering different ways to approach a problem.

It can also be valuable for students who want to become more confident with mathematics. By exploring ideas in an interactive setting, students can experience maths as a subject built around curiosity, reasoning and discovery rather than simply getting answers right or wrong.

Students can develop transferable skills including logical reasoning, analytical thinking, problem-solving, recognising patterns, perseverance, collaboration and communicating their thinking clearly.

Learn from Expert Tutors

Atlas Summer Courses tutors are experienced educators and subject specialists who bring their own knowledge, interests and enthusiasm into their teaching.

For our younger students, tutors aim to create an environment where everyone feels encouraged to participate, ask questions and experiment with different approaches. Maths lessons are designed to be interactive and age-appropriate, helping students build confidence while developing their mathematical thinking.

Because tutors shape course content around their expertise and the students in their group, different Maths Explorers courses at Harrow may explore different mathematical concepts, problems and approaches to problem-solving.

Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of tutors who have previously taught with us rather than confirmation of who will teach a particular course.

What Can Students Gain from Maths Explorers?

Maths Explorers can help young students become more confident tackling unfamiliar problems, thinking logically and explaining how they reached a solution.

Students can begin developing mathematical habits that support future learning: looking for patterns, breaking complex problems into manageable steps, testing different approaches and checking whether their reasoning makes sense.

These skills can support future learning not only in Mathematics but also across subjects such as Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Economics and other areas where logical and quantitative thinking are important.

A Maths Explorers summer course at Harrow gives students the opportunity to discover a broader and more exploratory side of mathematics while developing confidence, curiosity and problem-solving skills that can support their learning well beyond the summer.
