Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Maths Explorers is designed for curious 9–10-year-olds who love solving puzzles and want to see how maths applies to the world around them. From geometry and algebra to statistics and patterns, students will explore key areas of pure and applied maths through hands-on challenges and games. They’ll crack codes, tackle brainteasers, and build confidence in using numbers creatively. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—instead, we tailor what we teach based on the group’s interests, so the course stays engaging, relevant, and fun. Each day also includes a reflection activity to help students absorb what they’ve learned.
Teaching methodology
Our teaching for 9-10-year-old students is focused on interactive and task-based learning. You will be taught by experienced primary teachers, who are there to inspire and engage you with the subjects they are passionate about. Our courses run over a week, and during this time you will develop your subject knowledge through multimedia presentations, group work, games, problem-solving, and project work with a meaningful real-life focus.
The 9–10 Maths Explorers programme is delivered by Atlas Summer Courses at Harrow School, one of the UK's leading independent boarding schools. With caring house parents and dedicated on-course staff, your young person will be fully supported as they explore mathematical ideas in a fun and engaging way. Harrow's historic setting and tradition of academic excellence provide the perfect backdrop for young learners to build confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and make new friends along the way.
Students stay in standard shared rooms at Harrow School, with caring house parents and on-course staff ensuring comfort, safety, and support throughout their stay.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students dine in the school’s dining hall or local facilities, with all dietary requirements catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Maths Explorers makes numbers exciting by showing how they shape the world around us. Through puzzles, games, and creative challenges, students discover that maths is not just about getting the right answer — it’s about thinking boldly, solving problems, and feeling confident when exploring new ideas. Every moment is designed to spark curiosity and help young mathematicians see their own potential.
Each weekday includes two fun and interactive morning lessons where maths becomes hands-on through activities like code-breaking, patterns, logic games, and real-life problem solving. Afternoons bring supervised project time, followed by house activities and a mid-week excursion to apply learning beyond the classroom. Evenings are filled with reflection and social events including outdoor games and a themed disco — ending the week with a proud graduation celebration. With small classes (maximum 15 students) and full supervision, children feel safe and supported while developing independence, confidence, and a genuine enjoyment of maths.
