Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Architecture is designed for 13–15-year-olds who are interested in how buildings are designed and constructed. Students will explore the history and theory of architecture while gaining hands-on experience in designing and developing their own structures. They’ll study contemporary architectural trends and learn how design choices, from materials to layout, impact the functionality and aesthetics of a building. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning relevant, engaging, and practical. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and collaboration, along with a reflection session to help students track their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in small groups (typically around 8–10 students) means you get quality time with your teacher and can ask as many questions as you like. Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and set practice tasks to help build your knowledge and skills. You’ll also have opportunities for group work, independent research, and homework assignments that are discussed in class. Small class sizes mean everyone has the chance to contribute, and students learn from debating with one another as well as from their tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, is defined by its architecture — from medieval towers and Gothic spires to striking modern buildings. As part of the 13–15 Architecture programme, your child will live in a city where every street reflects centuries of design and creativity. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop, with its historic colleges, renowned museums, and skyline that tells the story of architectural ideas across the ages.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Architecture blends creativity with problem-solving — shaping the spaces where people live, learn, and connect. In this course, students explore how buildings are designed, why cities look the way they do, and how architecture responds to culture, sustainability, and human needs. Through sketching, model-making, and case-study analysis, they learn to observe the world differently — noticing detail, structure, and possibility in every space around them.
Seminar-style lessons (maximum 10 students) allow expert tutors to guide each learner as they develop their design thinking and visual communication skills. Afternoons feature hands-on projects, group critiques, and excursions into Oxford’s iconic architectural landscape — from medieval colleges to modern design. With structured social time and supportive pastoral care throughout the week, students finish with sharper creativity, stronger spatial awareness, and growing confidence in their ability to design solutions that make a difference.
