Learning

Outline

At Atlas Summer Courses, Mathematics is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to deepen their understanding of mathematical theory and improve problem-solving skills. Students will explore fundamental mathematical concepts and develop the ability to reason rigorously with mathematics, going beyond basic calculations. They’ll learn how to apply mathematical thinking to solve real-world problems and how to prove or disprove mathematical arguments. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.

Teaching methodology

Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.

The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with some of the world’s greatest mathematical thinkers, from Ada Lovelace, the pioneer of computing, to Sir Roger Penrose, Nobel Prize–winning physicist. As part of the 16–17 Mathematics programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by logic, problem-solving, and discovery. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of mathematical thought that continues to influence how we understand the world.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.

Food and catering

Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

The Atlas Summer Courses Experience

Mathematics is the language of logic, patterns, and possibility. In Oxford, students deepen their understanding of core mathematical concepts while exploring how numbers shape breakthroughs in science, technology, and everyday problem-solving. It’s the ideal course for curious thinkers who enjoy tackling challenges, spotting connections, and pushing beyond standard classroom learning.

With no more than 10 students per group, teaching is discussion-based and highly personalised. Learners complete independent assignments, take part in interactive seminars, and receive tailored feedback through tutorial-style sessions — helping them reason more clearly and communicate ideas with confidence. Beyond academics, students live and study in a collegiate setting, experience cultural excursions, and build friendships from around the world. They return home with stronger analytical skills, renewed confidence, and a certificate plus a tutor-written letter recognising their progress.

James A
James is an alumnus of Atlas Summer Courses and specialises in areas including Logic, Model Theory, Non-linear Dynamics, Fluids, and Algebraic Geometry. He has contributed to projects formalising mathematical theorems, and his first paper is due to be published. James regularly gives talks to help inspire interest in mathematics, including at Oxbridge colleges, Imperial College, and on BBC radio, and he aims to pursue an academic career sharing advanced mathematics with wider audiences.
Dr Simon M
Simon holds a PhD in Differential Geometry from the University of Leeds and is an experienced mathematics educator. Before moving into teaching, he spent many years in the IT industry developing geometric software. He is interested in both the history and the future of mathematics, and his teaching often connects classical ideas—from figures like Leonhard Euler—to modern tools such as computer algebra systems.
Tabitha O
Tabitha achieved A grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Physics at A Level before completing an integrated master’s degree in Mathematics, graduating with a double first and placing in the top ten of her cohort. She will soon begin a PhD in Cyber Security. Tabitha has extensive tutoring experience across GCSE and GCSE retakes, gifted and talented programmes, SATs, AS and A Level Maths (pure and applied), as well as STEP and MAT preparation. She also supports Oxbridge Maths and PPE applicants, including running mock interviews.
Dr Tom C
Tom holds a PhD in Fluid Dynamics from the University of Cambridge and teaches applied mathematics to undergraduates at the University of Oxford. He also works closely with Oxford’s access and outreach team, giving talks in schools and universities across the UK. Tom runs the award-winning outreach programme Tom Rocks Maths, which produces videos, podcasts, puzzles, and articles designed to make maths engaging and accessible. His work has partnered with organisations including the BBC, the European Mathematical Society, Cambridge University Press, Oxplore, the Naked Scientists, and New Scientist.
