At Atlas Summer Courses, Creative Writing is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about writing and eager to hone their craft. Students will explore the methods and principles behind captivating stories and unforgettable characters. Whether crafting compelling prose or delving into the art of poetry, students will learn how to engage their readers with well-placed details, strong narratives, and vibrant descriptions. Through analysing the works of great writers, students will refine their writing techniques and develop their unique voice. With individually tailored feedback, they will enhance their skills and gain confidence in their writing. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on creative writing techniques, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to refine your ideas, defend your arguments, receive detailed academic feedback, and engage in sophisticated discussion with your tutor and peers. Designed for adult learners, this teaching approach places greater emphasis on independent research, academic debate, and the confidence to think and communicate at university level. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long inspired writers and storytellers—from Lewis Carroll and Oscar Wilde to modern authors who found creativity in its libraries, quads, and cafés. As part of the 18–24 Creative Writing programme, you’ll live in a city where imagination and scholarship come together. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for writing, with its historic colleges, atmospheric streets, and long tradition of literary creativity.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

Creative writing allows students to experiment with language, imagination, and voice — turning ideas into stories that connect with others. In Oxford, learners explore fiction, poetry, or dramatic writing while studying techniques used by great authors throughout history. Through workshops, readings, and thoughtful discussion, they discover new ways to express character, emotion, and narrative — and begin shaping their own style with confidence.
Tutorial-style learning in groups of no more than ten ensures supportive feedback, space to take risks, and opportunities to refine craft through revision. Two independent writing assignments receive personalised tutor guidance that strengthens structure, clarity, and creative decision-making. Enrichment activities, college-style living, and a global community of fellow storytellers make the experience inspiring both personally and artistically. Students leave with a certificate of completion, a tailored tutor recommendation, and the momentum to continue writing beyond the summer.

Our courses for ages 18–24 are taught by experienced educators and subject specialists with expertise relevant to their subjects. Tutors shape their syllabi around their own areas of specialism. Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of educators who have previously taught with us.
Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
Students aged 18–24 receive a certificate of completion, detailed feedback from their tutor and a personalised letter of recommendation, reflecting their participation, academic progress and achievements during the course.
Atlas Summer Courses gives students aged 18–24 the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge through small-group teaching and independent study. Students can engage with challenging ideas, develop their own academic thinking and learn alongside an international community of peers.
There are no formal entry requirements. Students should have a genuine interest in their chosen subject, and teaching is tailored to each student’s interests and abilities so everyone can engage at the right level. All lessons are taught in English, so students should have a good working understanding of spoken and written English.
