Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, English Literature is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to deepen their understanding of literary works and their meanings. Students will study the works of renowned writers such as William Wordsworth, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and Ali Smith, exploring a range of styles and contexts. They’ll learn how to analyse, interpret, and engage with literature, refining their ability to think critically and creatively. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has inspired generations of writers, from J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis to Philip Pullman. As part of the 16–17 English Literature programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by storytelling, creativity, and scholarship. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic libraries, literary landmarks, and long tradition of exploring the written word.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Oxford is a city shaped by writers — from Tolkien to Wilde — making it the perfect environment to explore the power of storytelling. Students dive into a selection of texts across genres and eras, developing close-reading skills while debating themes, interpretations, and literary craft. They learn how language influences thought, how stories reflect society, and how to express their own ideas with precision and flair.
Small-group seminars (maximum ten students) ensure lively discussion where every voice is heard, while tutorial-style feedback helps students strengthen their analytical writing and personal perspective. Tutors adapt readings and activities to the group’s interests — whether that’s modern fiction or classic poetry. Life in an Oxford college, paired with cultural excursions and social experiences, brings inspiration beyond the classroom. Students finish with a certificate of completion, personalised tutor recommendation, and a deeper confidence in their literary voice.
