At Atlas Summer Courses, Environmental Science is an advanced course designed for 18–24-year-olds passionate about understanding the complex relationships between physical, chemical, and biological processes in our environment. Students will explore pressing topics such as environmental pollution, conservation, and natural resource management, as well as key global challenges like sustainability, climate change, and environmental justice. Through in-depth study and discussions, you will develop the necessary skills to address these issues and contribute to solutions that promote a sustainable future. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring a personalised and relevant learning experience. The course also includes a masterclass on environmental research and critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to refine your ideas, defend your arguments, receive detailed academic feedback, and engage in sophisticated discussion with your tutor and peers. Designed for adult learners, this teaching approach places greater emphasis on independent research, academic debate, and the confidence to think and communicate at university level. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been at the forefront of environmental research and discovery—from pioneering studies in ecology to modern advances in climate science and sustainability. As part of the 18–24 Environmental Science (Advanced) programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by inquiry and innovation. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a long tradition of exploring solutions to global environmental challenges.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

Environmental science examines how natural systems function — and how we can protect them in a rapidly changing world. In Cambridge, students explore climate science, ecosystems, sustainability, and environmental policy through scientific analysis and contemporary case studies. Discussions connect research to real-world solutions, from conservation strategies to renewable energy innovations, helping learners understand how environmental progress is made.
This advanced-level course is designed for those who have completed at least two years of undergraduate study (or equivalent) in a related field. Tutorials are capped at 10 students, ensuring personalised academic guidance and space to test ideas through debate. Two independent assignments receive detailed tutor feedback that strengthens scientific communication and critical thinking. Alongside enrichment activities, life in a college-style setting, and a diverse international community, students gain confidence in their academic direction. Each participant leaves with a certificate of completion, a personalised tutor recommendation, and greater motivation to help shape a more sustainable future.

Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
Students aged 18–24 receive a certificate of completion, detailed feedback from their tutor and a personalised letter of recommendation, reflecting their participation, academic progress and achievements during the course.
Atlas Summer Courses gives students aged 18–24 the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge through small-group teaching and independent study. Students can engage with challenging ideas, develop their own academic thinking and learn alongside an international community of peers.
Applicants must be aged 18–24 and have completed at least the second year of an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject, as these are advanced courses. All lessons are taught in English, so students should have a good working understanding of spoken and written English.
