At Atlas Summer Courses, Sustainable Engineering is designed for 18–24-year-olds passionate about addressing environmental challenges through engineering. Students will explore how engineers can mitigate the most significant environmental threats, such as climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels. The course covers the design, enhancement, and assessment of renewable energy systems, helping students understand current technologies and their impact on the world. Through practical and theoretical study, students will gain the interdisciplinary tools needed to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable future. From understanding global environmental challenges to designing technologies that can change the course of the planet's future, this course offers a deep dive into sustainable engineering. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring a relevant and engaging learning experience. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, as well as a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to refine your ideas, defend your arguments, receive detailed academic feedback, and engage in sophisticated discussion with your tutor and peers. Designed for adult learners, this teaching approach places greater emphasis on independent research, academic debate, and the confidence to think and communicate at university level. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been associated with innovation and engineering, from early advances in mathematics and mechanics to modern approaches to sustainability. As part of the 18–24 Sustainable Engineering programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by discovery and design. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its renowned museums, historic setting, and long tradition of exploring solutions to global challenges.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

How can we design a world that works for people and the planet? This course introduces students to engineering solutions that tackle real environmental challenges — from renewable energy systems to sustainable building design and responsible manufacturing. Through case studies, analysis, and creative problem-solving, learners explore how engineers develop technologies that protect resources and support a more resilient global future.
Tutorial groups have up to 10 students, discussions are interactive, practical, and rooted in real-world context. Two independent assignments receive personalised, tutorial-style feedback that helps students communicate technical ideas clearly and confidently. Beyond lessons, enrichment activities, college-style living, and a diverse international community create a supportive space to grow socially and academically. Students leave with a certificate of completion, a tailored tutor recommendation, and the confidence to pursue engineering pathways with purpose and curiosity.

Our courses for ages 18–24 are taught by experienced educators and subject specialists with expertise relevant to their subjects. Tutors shape their syllabi around their own areas of specialism. Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of educators who have previously taught with us.
Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
Students aged 18–24 receive a certificate of completion, detailed feedback from their tutor and a personalised letter of recommendation, reflecting their participation, academic progress and achievements during the course.
Atlas Summer Courses gives students aged 18–24 the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge through small-group teaching and independent study. Students can engage with challenging ideas, develop their own academic thinking and learn alongside an international community of peers.
There are no formal entry requirements. Students should have a genuine interest in their chosen subject, and teaching is tailored to each student’s interests and abilities so everyone can engage at the right level. All lessons are taught in English, so students should have a good working understanding of spoken and written English.
