What Will You Explore in Medicine?
Medicine brings together scientific knowledge, evidence and decision-making to understand human health and disease.
Studying medicine academically can involve exploring how the human body functions, what happens when normal processes are disrupted and how scientific research contributes to our understanding of diseases and their treatment.
Medicine also raises questions that extend beyond biology. Medical professionals and researchers must evaluate evidence, make decisions under uncertainty and consider ethical questions surrounding healthcare, research and new technologies.
A Medicine summer course gives you the opportunity to explore this interdisciplinary field in greater depth and consider what studying medicine involves beyond the school curriculum.
What Will You Study on a Medicine Summer Course?
There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.
Depending on your course and age group, you could explore areas such as human physiology, disease, medical research, genetics, pharmacology, public health or medical ethics.
You might consider questions such as:
- How does the human body maintain normal function?
- What happens when disease disrupts biological systems?
- How do scientists investigate the causes of disease?
- How is evidence used to evaluate potential treatments?
- How are genetics changing our understanding of medicine?
- What ethical questions can arise in medical research and healthcare?
The depth and approach will reflect the age group you're studying with. Tutors can also develop the course around their own areas of expertise and the interests of their students.
Any syllabus shown on our website is an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact topics you'll study.

You don't need to have studied Medicine before. The courses may particularly appeal to you if you enjoy biology and chemistry, are fascinated by how the human body works or are considering medicine, biomedical sciences or another health-related subject in the future.
You'll develop transferable skills including scientific reasoning, critical thinking, analysing evidence, problem-solving, independent study and communicating complex ideas clearly.
You can also explore related subjects through our Biology and Chemistry summer courses, Neuroscience summer courses and Biotechnology and Genetics summer courses.
Learn from Expert Tutors
Atlas Summer Courses tutors are experienced educators and subject specialists active across academia, industry and education.
They bring their own academic expertise and interests into their teaching and have the freedom to shape their syllabus around both their specialism and the students in their group. This allows each Medicine summer course to explore different areas of medical science while maintaining an appropriate level of academic challenge.
Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of tutors who have previously taught with us rather than confirmation of who will teach your course.
Where Can Studying Medicine Take You?
Medicine connects with a wide range of subjects across the biological, medical and health sciences.
Students interested in the field may go on to study Medicine itself or related subjects such as biomedical sciences, neuroscience, biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics or public health.
Studying medicine and related sciences develops scientific, analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to further study and careers across medicine, healthcare, medical research, pharmaceuticals and the wider life sciences.
A Medicine summer course gives you the opportunity to explore your interest in the subject before making longer-term academic decisions and gain a better understanding of the scientific questions at the heart of modern medicine.
