Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Medicine is designed for 16–17-year-olds interested in understanding how genetics and lifestyle intersect to shape health and disease. Students will explore a broad range of topics, from human diseases and developmental biology to stem cells and regenerative medicine. Through a combination of theory and hands-on study, they will gain a deep understanding of cell biology and its connection to the human body, providing them with a foundational knowledge of modern medicine. The course will also look at how understanding normal bodily functions is crucial for tackling diseases and how ongoing research is pushing the boundaries of medical treatment. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making the learning experience both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and collaboration, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been at the forefront of medical discovery—from the first studies of anatomy and physiology to modern breakthroughs in genetics and public health. As part of the 16–17 Medicine programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by innovation and inquiry. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, renowned museums, and a legacy of research that continues to transform healthcare worldwide.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis, including breakfast and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, offering a variety of dining options.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Medicine is a subject driven by curiosity, compassion, and the determination to improve lives. In Cambridge, students dive into the science behind the human body and the challenges faced by modern healthcare. Guided by expert tutors and surrounded by the city’s legacy of scientific breakthroughs, they work with peers from around the world to examine disease, diagnosis, and innovation in medicine — developing confidence in their ideas and a clearer picture of life in healthcare.
Learning takes place in small seminars (up to 10 students), where discussions are collaborative, challenging, and tailored to each group’s interests. Students complete independent assignments with personalised feedback in supportive tutorials that strengthen communication and analytical thinking — key skills for future study. Alongside subject learning, social activities and excursions offer the chance to connect with others and explore a world-leading academic city. They return home with a certificate, a recommendation letter, and a strengthened belief in their ability to make a difference.
