Why Study Marketing and Media Together?

Marketing is about understanding audiences and communicating value, while media provides many of the channels through which those messages reach people.

Studying the subjects together allows you to examine both the strategy behind communication and the media environment in which it takes place. You might consider how organisations build brands, why particular campaigns attract attention or how different audiences respond to the same message.

Digital platforms have made this relationship even more important. Social media, online advertising and changing patterns of media consumption have transformed how organisations communicate and how audiences interact with brands.

A Marketing and Media summer course gives you the opportunity to explore these connections and develop a more critical understanding of the messages you encounter every day.

What Will You Study on a Marketing and Media Summer Course?

There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.

Depending on your course, you could explore areas such as branding, consumer behaviour, advertising, digital marketing, social media, audience analysis, media strategy or communication.

You might consider questions such as:

  • Why do people choose one brand over another?
  • What makes a marketing campaign effective?
  • How do organisations understand and target different audiences?
  • How has social media changed the relationship between brands and consumers?
  • How does the choice of media affect the way a message is received?
  • What ethical responsibilities do marketers have when trying to influence an audience?

This flexible approach allows tutors to explore their specialist areas while responding to the interests and progress of the group. Any syllabus shown on our website is therefore an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact topics you'll study.

How You'll Learn on a Marketing and Media Summer Course

The Atlas Summer Courses Marketing and Media summer course combines small-group seminars, tutorials and private study across the two-week programme.

18 hours of small-group seminars
You'll take part in six three-hour seminars, exploring marketing and media through discussion, case studies and activities. You may analyse campaigns, consider different audience perspectives and evaluate the decisions behind real-world marketing and communication strategies.

2 hours of tutorials
You'll have one tutorial each week, providing a focused environment in which to discuss the essay or problem sheet you've been working on and receive detailed feedback.

Around 20 hours of private study
You'll complete reading in preparation for seminars and work independently on an essay or problem sheet for each tutorial.

Together, these give you experience of a more independent approach to academic learning, where research, analysis and your own ideas all play an important role.
