Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Psychology is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to understand how the mind works and influences behaviour. Students will explore topics such as neuroanatomy, the psychology and physiology of the brain, and alternative theories of psychology. They’ll study how emotions, past experiences, and character traits shape thoughts and actions, and examine the impact of chemical imbalances on mental health. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with pioneering work in psychology, from early studies of the mind to modern research into behaviour and cognition. As part of the 16–17 Psychology programme, you’ll live in a city known for inquiry, reflection, and big ideas. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of exploring how people think and behave.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Psychology helps us understand what drives human behaviour — how we think, learn, and make decisions. In Oxford, students stay in a real college setting and explore ideas in the same city where pioneering studies in cognitive and clinical psychology have taken place. Alongside seminars, they enjoy cultural visits, structured social events, and the excitement of experiencing student-style life with a diverse group of peers from around the world.
Learning happens in small seminar-style classes (up to 10 students), with expert tutors guiding students through core topics such as memory, emotion, mental health, research methods, and the brain. Independent assignments encourage deeper thinking, with personalised 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial feedback to build confidence and academic independence. By the end of the course, students leave with sharper analytical skills, a clearer understanding of psychology as a field, and a certificate plus a tutor-written recommendation — a strong foundation for future study in psychology or related disciplines.
