Outline

At Atlas Summer Courses, Physics is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are passionate about understanding the laws that govern our universe. Students will explore the history of the atom, the principles of relativity, and delve into the complexities of quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and particle physics. They’ll gain a deep understanding of their tutor’s specialism, whether it’s condensed matter, astrophysics, or a more applied field, while applying scientific principles to real-world problems. Through a mix of solo and group study, they’ll develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will help them tackle complex physics concepts. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring a learning experience that is both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and collaboration, as well as a reflection session to track their progress and set new goals.

Teaching methodology

Discover tutorial-style teaching at its best. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars (typically 8–10 students). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to discuss your work and receive in-depth feedback from your tutor, while also gaining new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.

The Atlas Summer Courses Experience

Physics helps us understand the laws that govern the universe — from the tiniest particles to the vastness of space. In Cambridge, students stay in college accommodation and study in classrooms located within a world-renowned academic setting. Alongside a global group of peers, they take part in cultural excursions and evening activities that build confidence, independence, and a real sense of what it’s like to learn in one of the UK’s most inspiring university cities.

Learning is delivered through small seminar-based lessons (up to 10 students), guided by an expert tutor who tailors the content to the group’s interests. Students complete two independent problem-solving tasks or written assignments, then discuss their thinking through personalised 1:1 or 2:1 tutorials. They leave with a certificate, a tutor recommendation letter, and stronger analytical skills — prepared to continue exploring physics and related fields at a higher level.
