Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Neuroscience is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are fascinated by the brain and its complexities. Students will explore the brain’s chemistry, structure, and its impact on how we think, feel, and act. They’ll dive deep into topics like the nervous system, cognition, sensory functions, and the brain’s circuits and systems, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how the brain drives behaviour and emotions. Through a mix of solo and group study, they’ll sharpen their critical thinking and analytical skills while uncovering the latest discoveries in neuroscience. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, ensuring an engaging and relevant learning experience. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking and collaboration, as well as a reflection session to track their progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has played a leading role in advancing our understanding of the brain—from early studies of anatomy to modern breakthroughs in neuroscience and cognition. As part of the 16–17 Neuroscience programme, you’ll live in a city defined by discovery and inquiry. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a tradition of exploring how the mind and nervous system shape human experience.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis, including breakfast and dinner. Meals are served at the accommodation or at local restaurants, offering a variety of dining options.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Neuroscience explores how the brain works — how we think, learn, remember, and experience the world. In Cambridge, students stay in college accommodation and learn in a city known for pioneering breakthroughs in science and medicine. A full programme of social activities and cultural excursions helps them build confidence and independence while connecting with students from around the world in an inspiring academic environment.
Teaching takes place in small seminar-style groups (up to 10 students), guided by expert tutors who tailor topics to the group’s interests — from neural communication and memory to neurotechnology and disease. Students complete two independent assignments and discuss their ideas through personalised 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial-style feedback. By the end of the course, they gain stronger analytical and scientific communication skills, along with a certificate of completion and a personalised tutor recommendation to support their future study in neuroscience or related fields.
