Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Neuroscience is designed for 13–15-year-olds who are curious about how the brain works and influences our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Students will explore the structure and function of the brain, the nervous system, and how our senses shape our experiences. They’ll learn how the brain controls emotions, learning, and memory, and examine why, despite scientific progress, there’s still much to discover. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and thought-provoking. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and collaboration, along with a reflection session to help students review their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in small groups (up to 10 students) means you get quality time with your teacher and can ask as many questions as you like. Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and set practice tasks to help build your knowledge and skills. You’ll also have opportunities for group work, independent research, and homework assignments that are discussed in class. Small class sizes mean everyone has the chance to contribute, and students learn from debating with one another as well as from their tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with more than 800 years of academic tradition, has been central to major advances in neuroscience—from early studies of the nervous system to cutting-edge research into the brain and behaviour. As part of the 13–15 Neuroscience programme, your child will live in a city shaped by scientific inquiry and discovery. The city of Cambridge provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a tradition of research that continues to unlock the mysteries of the mind.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Neuroscience explores the incredible system that makes us who we are — our brain. On this course, students dive into the mysteries of memory, learning, emotions, and behaviour through practical investigations and thought-provoking discussions. They’ll discover how neurons communicate, how brains develop, and how science is unlocking new ways to help people — building curiosity and confidence as they explore one of the most fascinating fields in modern science.
Every weekday includes small, seminar-style lessons (max 8 students) where learners experiment with perception, analyse real research, and explore what happens when the brain goes wrong. Afternoons mix directed study, masterclasses, and subject-linked excursions, helping students link neuroscience to everyday life — from illusions and senses to technology and wellbeing. With evening socials, safe supervision, and the inspiring atmosphere of Cambridge, students grow independence while strengthening scientific thinking, teamwork, and their ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
