At Atlas Summer Courses, International Relations is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are interested in understanding the complexities of global politics and multiculturalism. Students will explore the implications of national identities, question the prospects of peace in future generations, and engage in critical case studies from Western Europe to East Asia. The course will delve into the key factors influencing national identity, including language, ethnicity, religion, class, industrialisation, and modernisation. Students will develop a deep understanding of the forces that shape international relations, from the history of nation-building to the challenges of diplomacy in a modern world. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to refine your ideas, defend your arguments, receive detailed academic feedback, and engage in sophisticated discussion with your tutor and peers. Designed for adult learners, this teaching approach places greater emphasis on independent research, academic debate, and the confidence to think and communicate at university level. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has educated prime ministers, diplomats, and campaigners who have shaped global politics. As part of the 18–24 International Relations programme, you’ll live in a city known for debate, diplomacy, and the exchange of ideas. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, libraries, and long tradition of political thought and discussion.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

International relations explores the forces that shape global cooperation and conflict — diplomacy, security, human rights, and international institutions. In Oxford, students analyse the relationships between nations and the major challenges of our era, from climate negotiations to geopolitical tensions and global inequality. Debates and case studies help learners understand how global decisions are made, who influences them, and why they matter.
Tutorial-style learning in groups of no more than ten encourages every student to build confidence expressing ideas and responding to opposing viewpoints. Two written assignments receive personalised, tutorial-style feedback that strengthens research, analysis, and persuasive argumentation. With enrichment activities, college-style living, and peers from around the world, students explore global affairs through both academic and cultural lenses. A certificate of completion and a personalised tutor recommendation help support future applications in politics, diplomacy, and social sciences.

Our courses for ages 18–24 are taught by experienced educators and subject specialists with expertise relevant to their subjects. Tutors shape their syllabi around their own areas of specialism. Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of educators who have previously taught with us.
Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
Students aged 18–24 receive a certificate of completion, detailed feedback from their tutor and a personalised letter of recommendation, reflecting their participation, academic progress and achievements during the course.
Atlas Summer Courses gives students aged 18–24 the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge through small-group teaching and independent study. Students can engage with challenging ideas, develop their own academic thinking and learn alongside an international community of peers.
There are no formal entry requirements. Students should have a genuine interest in their chosen subject, and teaching is tailored to each student’s interests and abilities so everyone can engage at the right level. All lessons are taught in English, so students should have a good working understanding of spoken and written English.
