Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, International Development is designed for 18–24-year-olds who are passionate about addressing global inequality and understanding the complexities of human development. Students will explore the impact of the UN’s 2015 Sustainable Development Goals and critically examine the theories and opinions surrounding migration and its effect on communities and cultures. The course will cover the physical, social, economic, and political dimensions of development and post-development, giving students the tools to critically analyse the changing landscape of international development. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning both engaging and relevant. The course also includes a masterclass on critical thinking, along with a reflection session to track progress and set new goals.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to refine your ideas, defend your arguments, receive detailed academic feedback, and engage in sophisticated discussion with your tutor and peers. Designed for adult learners, this teaching approach places greater emphasis on independent research, academic debate, and the confidence to think and communicate at university level. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has long been a centre for debate on global issues, from poverty and education to sustainability and human rights. As part of the 18–24 International Development programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by discussion, research, and ideas that look beyond borders. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its libraries, museums, and long tradition of engaging with challenges that affect the wider world.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are provided on a half-board basis (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or at selected local restaurants. Students arrange their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.

How can we build a fairer, more sustainable world? International Development explores the economic, social, and political forces shaping global progress — from poverty and education to health systems, climate resilience, and humanitarian action. In Oxford, students examine real case studies and competing development strategies, learning how policy decisions and global partnerships influence the lives of communities around the world.
Tutorial-style learning in groups capped at eight encourages thoughtful debate, careful use of evidence, and confidence in communicating ideas. Two independent assignments receive personalised, tutorial-style feedback that sharpens research and problem-solving skills. With enrichment activities, college-style living, and peers from different cultural backgrounds, students are immersed in global perspectives inside and outside the classroom. Each participant leaves with a completion certificate, a tailored tutor recommendation, and a clearer sense of the pathways available in international development and related fields.

Our courses for ages 18–24 are taught by experienced educators and subject specialists with expertise relevant to their subjects. Tutors shape their syllabi around their own areas of specialism. Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of educators who have previously taught with us.
Oxford is open to all learners aged 18–24. Cambridge is more advanced and requires at least two years of undergraduate study in a related subject.
Students aged 18–24 receive a certificate of completion, detailed feedback from their tutor and a personalised letter of recommendation, reflecting their participation, academic progress and achievements during the course.
Atlas Summer Courses gives students aged 18–24 the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge through small-group teaching and independent study. Students can engage with challenging ideas, develop their own academic thinking and learn alongside an international community of peers.
There are no formal entry requirements. Students should have a genuine interest in their chosen subject, and teaching is tailored to each student’s interests and abilities so everyone can engage at the right level. All lessons are taught in English, so students should have a good working understanding of spoken and written English.
