Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Engineering is designed for 13–15-year-olds who want to explore how scientific principles are applied to solve real-world problems. Students will study topics such as sustainable energy, materials science, and the connections between physics and mathematics, while developing problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. They’ll gain practical experience by tackling engineering challenges and refining their approach to designing solutions. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning relevant and engaging. The course also includes a masterclass on teamwork and collaboration, along with a reflection session to help students track their goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in small groups (typically around 8–10 students) means you get quality time with your teacher and can ask as many questions as you like. Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and set practice tasks to help build your knowledge and skills. You’ll also have opportunities for group work, independent research, and homework assignments that are discussed in class. Small class sizes mean everyone has the chance to contribute, and students learn from debating with one another as well as from their tutor.
The city of Cambridge, with over 800 years of academic tradition, has been central to engineering innovation—from early advances in mechanics to modern breakthroughs in technology and design. As part of the 13–15 Engineering programme, your child will live in a city shaped by creativity and problem-solving. The city of Cambridge provides the perfect backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, world-class museums, and a tradition of discovery that continues to inspire future engineers.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
From renewable energy to robotics, engineering is where imagination meets innovation. This course gives students the chance to explore how engineers tackle global challenges and create technologies that transform everyday life. Through practical experiments, collaborative design tasks, and problem-solving challenges, learners discover how ideas take shape — and the impact they can have on the world. It’s a motivating introduction that builds confidence, curiosity, and a mindset for invention.
Each weekday features small seminar-style lessons (maximum 10 students), guided by expert tutors who encourage learners to test concepts, share ideas, and think creatively under pressure. Afternoons include hands-on projects, model-building, and real-world engineering challenges designed to strengthen teamwork and analytical skills. With structured social time and supportive staff throughout the week, students gain independence while developing the resilience and excitement that define great engineers.
