Study Media Studies in Cambridge
Our Media Studies summer course in Cambridge gives students aged 13–15 the opportunity to spend two weeks exploring media, communication and contemporary culture as part of an Atlas Summer Courses summer experience.
Media plays an important role in how we encounter information, entertainment, ideas and each other. Media Studies encourages you to examine the messages we see and hear every day and consider how they are created, why particular choices are made and how different audiences might respond.
Across the course, you'll be encouraged to move beyond simply consuming media and start analysing it critically. You'll consider how language, images, sound and storytelling can shape meaning, how different media forms communicate with audiences and how changing technologies continue to influence the ways content is produced and shared.
Outside your academic sessions, you'll experience the wider programme alongside other students, with time to enjoy Cambridge and take part in the social and cultural elements of your Atlas Summer Courses summer.
What Will You Study on a Media Studies Summer Course in Cambridge?
There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.
Depending on your tutor and group, you could explore different forms of media and communication, potentially considering areas such as film, television, journalism, advertising, social media or digital culture.
You might consider questions such as:
- How do media creators construct messages for different audiences?
- How can images, language and sound influence the way a message is understood?
- Why might different audiences interpret the same piece of media differently?
- How are people, places and ideas represented through media?
- How can advertising and other persuasive media influence audiences?
- How have digital platforms changed the way media is created and consumed?
- How can we evaluate the information and content we encounter online?
The precise content will reflect your tutor's expertise and the interests and learning needs of the students in your group. Any syllabus shown on our website is an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact media forms, platforms or topics you'll study.
