Why Study Mathematics and Physics Together?

Mathematics and physics are closely connected. Mathematics gives us the language and tools to describe patterns, relationships and quantities, while physics uses those tools to investigate how the world around us behaves.

Studying the subjects together allows you to see mathematical ideas in action. Equations can describe motion, mathematical models can help explain physical systems, and logical reasoning can be used to solve problems that might initially seem impossible.

A Maths and Physics summer school gives you the opportunity to explore these connections beyond your usual school curriculum and discover how the two disciplines can work together.

What Will You Study on a Mathematics and Physics Summer Course?

There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.

Depending on your course, you could explore areas such as mathematical problem-solving, mechanics, motion, forces, energy and the ways mathematical models can be used to investigate physical phenomena.

You may be challenged to approach familiar ideas in unfamiliar ways, apply mathematical reasoning to new situations and consider how theoretical concepts can help us understand real-world problems.

This flexible approach allows tutors to explore their specialist areas while responding to the interests and progress of the group. Any syllabus shown on our website is therefore an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact topics you'll study.

How You'll Learn on a Maths and Physics Summer Course

The Atlas Summer Courses Maths and Physics summer course combines small-group seminars with independent study across the two-week programme.

24 hours of small-group seminars
You'll take part in eight seminars where you'll explore ideas through interactive discussion, problems, case studies and activities. You'll be challenged to develop your responses, explain your reasoning and engage with ideas alongside your tutor and other students.

12 hours of private study
Between seminars, you'll complete a small amount of independent work. Depending on the topics being explored, this could involve reading, working through mathematical or physics problems, or preparing a presentation.

This combination helps you become more confident tackling problems independently while giving you opportunities to discuss your thinking, ask questions and receive detailed feedback.

Who Is the Mathematics and Physics Summer Course For?

Our Mathematics and Physics summer course for 13–15-year-olds is designed for students who enjoy solving problems, asking how things work and discovering the reasoning behind an answer.

It may particularly suit you if you enjoy maths and science at school but want to explore the subjects beyond your usual lessons, or if you're beginning to think about studying mathematics, physics, engineering or another STEM subject in the future.

You'll develop skills including logical reasoning, problem-solving, independent learning, interpreting information and explaining your thinking clearly.

Learn from Expert Tutors

Atlas Summer Courses tutors are experienced educators and subject specialists active across academia, industry and education.

They bring their own academic expertise and interests into their teaching and have the freedom to shape their syllabus around both their specialism and the students in their group. This means your course can introduce ideas and approaches that go beyond a standardised curriculum.

Tutors are confirmed closer to the summer, so profiles on our website are examples of tutors who have previously taught with us rather than confirmation of who will teach your course.

Where Can Mathematics and Physics Take You?

Mathematics and physics provide foundations for a wide range of subjects at university and beyond.

Students interested in these areas may go on to study mathematics or physics individually, or related subjects such as engineering, computer science, economics, astronomy and other physical sciences.

The problem-solving, analytical and quantitative skills developed through mathematics and physics are also valuable across careers in areas including engineering, technology, scientific research, data, finance and computing.

A Mathematics and Physics summer course gives you the opportunity to explore these interests at an earlier stage and discover which areas of STEM you might want to pursue further.
