What Is Law Explorers?
Law Explorers introduces younger students to legal thinking and some of the questions that laws are designed to address.
Law affects many parts of everyday life. It establishes rules, helps resolve disagreements and provides ways for societies to make decisions about rights, responsibilities and acceptable behaviour.
Exploring law also means considering different sides of an argument. Legal questions aren't always straightforward, and understanding them can require us to examine evidence, listen to competing viewpoints and explain why we have reached a particular conclusion.
Our Law Explorers summer course introduces these ideas in an age-appropriate way, encouraging students to question, discuss and develop their own reasoned arguments.
What Will Students Explore on the Law Explorers Course?
There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the ages, abilities and interests of their students into account.
Depending on the tutor and group, students could explore ideas connected with laws, justice, rights, responsibilities, evidence and legal argument.
They might consider questions such as:
- Why do societies need laws?
- What makes a rule fair?
- What happens when people disagree about what is right?
- How can evidence help us reach a conclusion?
- Why is it important to consider both sides of an argument?
- How can we build a convincing argument for our point of view?

How Students Learn
Our Junior courses are designed to make academic learning engaging, interactive and appropriate for younger students.
12 hours of small-group lessons
Across the one-week programme, students take part in structured small-group classes. Lessons are designed to get students thinking and learning in an engaging and interactive way, with the tutor encouraging everyone to participate and contribute their ideas.
Each lesson follows a process of review, learning and application, giving students opportunities to develop their understanding before applying what they've learned through age-appropriate discussions and activities.
Students are encouraged to ask questions, listen to different perspectives, consider evidence and explain the reasoning behind their conclusions.
The aim is to develop curiosity and confidence while helping students become more thoughtful and independent thinkers.
Who Is Law Explorers For?
Our Law Explorers summer course for ages 9–12 is designed for young learners who enjoy asking questions, discussing different viewpoints and thinking about ideas such as fairness, rules and justice.
Students don't need any previous knowledge of law. The course may particularly appeal to children who enjoy debating ideas, solving problems, explaining their opinions or considering why different people might reach different conclusions.
Students will be encouraged to develop skills including critical thinking, reasoning, communication, considering evidence, constructing arguments and listening to different perspectives.
With separate age groups for 9–10 and 11–12, teaching can be adapted to provide an appropriate level of challenge for students at different stages.

There is no fixed curriculum that every student follows. Our tutors create their own syllabi based on their academic expertise and the interests and learning needs of their students.
This means the exact topics can vary between courses and years. Any syllabus or topics shown on our website are examples from previous courses and shouldn't be taken as a guarantee of exactly what you'll study.
Teaching depends on your age group. Students aged 9–12 and Scholars aged 12–14 learn through structured, interactive small-group classes. Students aged 13–15 combine small-group seminars with private study, while students aged 16–17 and 18–24 experience seminars, tutorials and independent study.
Across our programmes, teaching is designed to encourage active participation, questioning and independent thinking rather than simply listening to lectures.
