What Is Creative Writing Scholars?
Creative Writing Scholars gives students the opportunity to explore how writers use language, structure and literary techniques to communicate ideas and create engaging pieces of writing.
Creative writing isn't simply about having a good idea. Writers make choices about narrative, character, perspective, description, voice and form, then revisit those choices as they draft and refine their work.
For students aged 12–14, studying Creative Writing provides an opportunity to experiment with these techniques while becoming more thoughtful about their own creative decisions.
A Creative Writing Scholars summer course encourages students to try new approaches, reflect on their writing and begin developing a distinctive voice and style of their own.
What Will Students Explore on the Creative Writing Scholars Course?
There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.
Depending on the tutor and group, students could explore different forms and genres alongside narrative and poetic techniques.
They might consider questions such as:

How Students Learn
Our Scholars courses are designed to make learning engaging, interactive and appropriately challenging for students aged 12–14.
12 hours of small-group lessons
Across the one-week programme, students take part in structured small-group classes. Tutors encourage everyone to participate, experiment with ideas and develop their enthusiasm for writing.
Each lesson follows a process of review, learning and application, allowing students to revisit previous learning, explore new literary techniques and then apply them to their own creative work.
Peer feedback is a regular part of the course, creating opportunities for students to discuss writing, consider different approaches and reflect critically on both their own creative choices and the work of others.
Students are encouraged to experiment rather than expecting their first draft to be their final one. Through writing, feedback and revision, they'll develop a greater understanding of how their work can be refined and strengthened.
Who Is Creative Writing Scholars For?
Our Creative Writing Scholars summer course for 12–14-year-olds is designed for students who enjoy writing and want to develop their creativity in a more focused academic environment.
Students don't need previous Creative Writing experience. The course may particularly appeal to those who enjoy creating stories or poetry, experimenting with language, reading different forms of writing or developing ideas of their own.
Students are encouraged to bring creativity, openness and a willingness to experiment with their writing.

Teaching depends on your age group. Students aged 9–12 and Scholars aged 12–14 learn through structured, interactive small-group classes. Students aged 13–15 combine small-group seminars with private study, while students aged 16–17 and 18–24 experience seminars, tutorials and independent study.
Across our programmes, teaching is designed to encourage active participation, questioning and independent thinking rather than simply listening to lectures.
