Study Computer Science in Oxford

Our Computer Science summer courses in Oxford give students aged 13–15, 16–17 and 18–24 the opportunity to spend two weeks exploring computation, technology and problem-solving as part of an Atlas Summer Courses summer experience.

Computer Science is about more than using computers or learning to code. It involves understanding how problems can be represented, broken down and solved through logical processes, as well as exploring the principles behind the technologies we use.

Across the course, you'll be encouraged to think systematically about problems, compare different approaches and consider how computational methods can be used to develop effective solutions. Depending on your course, this could involve theoretical ideas, practical applications or a combination of both.

Outside your academic sessions, you'll experience the wider programme alongside other students, with time to enjoy Oxford and take part in the social and cultural elements of your summer.

What Will You Study on a Computer Science Summer Course in Oxford?

There is no prescribed syllabus that every student follows. Atlas Summer Courses tutors create their own syllabi, drawing on their expertise while taking the interests, abilities and learning needs of their students into account.

Depending on your tutor, group and age range, you could explore areas such as programming, algorithms, computational thinking, data, computer systems or other aspects of computer science.

You might consider questions such as:

  • How can complex problems be broken down into manageable steps?
  • What makes an algorithm effective?
  • How can programming turn an idea into a working solution?
  • How do computers represent and process information?
  • How can different computational approaches to the same problem be compared?
  • What are the capabilities and limitations of computational systems?
  • How might developments in computing influence future technologies?

The depth and approach will reflect the age group you're studying with, as well as your tutor's academic expertise and the interests of the group. Any syllabus shown on our website is an example from a previous course rather than a guarantee of the exact topics, technologies or programming languages you'll study.

How You'll Learn on Your Computer Science Course

How you'll study Computer Science depends on your age group, with each course with Atlas Summer Courses designed to provide an appropriate level of academic challenge and independence.

Ages 13–15

24 hours of small-group seminars
You'll take part in eight seminars where you'll explore computer science through interactive discussions, problems and activities. You'll be encouraged to develop solutions, test different approaches and explain the reasoning behind your decisions.

12 hours of private study
You'll complete a small amount of work for each seminar. Depending on the course, this might involve solving computational problems, reading, researching a topic or developing a piece of work to share with the group. There will be opportunities to work independently as well as collaboratively with your peers.

Ages 16–17 and 18–24

18 hours of small-group seminars
You'll take part in six three-hour seminars, exploring computer science concepts and problems through discussion, case studies and activities.

2 hours of tutorials
You'll have one tutorial each week, usually with your tutor and one other student. Tutorials provide a focused opportunity to discuss the essay, problem sheet or other academic work you've been completing, explain your approach and receive detailed feedback.

Around 20 hours of private study
You'll complete reading and preparation for seminars and work independently on academic tasks for each tutorial.

Across all age groups, you'll be encouraged to participate actively, experiment with different approaches and become more confident applying logical and computational thinking to unfamiliar problems.
