Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Sustainable Engineering is designed for 16–17-year-olds who are passionate about addressing environmental challenges through engineering solutions. Students will study key topics such as climate change, renewable energy systems, and the impact of dwindling fossil fuel supplies. They’ll develop the skills to design, assess, and enhance sustainable technologies, exploring existing and emerging solutions that can help address global environmental issues. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn the Oxford way with tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars (typically 8–10 students). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to discuss your work and receive in-depth feedback from your tutor, while also gaining new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you’ll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with innovation for centuries, from early advances in science and engineering to modern approaches to sustainability. As part of the 16–17 Sustainable Engineering programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by discovery and creative problem-solving. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of ideas that continue to influence how we design for the future.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Sustainable Engineering is about tackling the world’s biggest challenges with creativity and purposeful design. In Oxford — a city shaped by centuries of scientific and technological progress — students explore how engineers create solutions that protect the planet, improve communities, and drive innovation. Through hands-on problem-solving and collaborative design, they begin to see how engineering can shape a better future.
Small seminar-style classes (up to 10 students) allow every learner to contribute, investigate real-world case studies, and receive personalised feedback from expert tutors. Independent assignments, lively tutorials, and social activities help students grow both intellectually and personally, while excursions connect classroom ideas to the wider world. By the end of the course, students leave with new confidence, strengthened analytical and creative skills, and a certificate and recommendation letter that reflect their achievement and ambition.
