Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Philosophy is designed for 16–17-year-olds who want to explore fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and the self. Students will study key philosophical topics such as scepticism, the mind-body problem, free will, personal identity, and the nature of knowledge. They’ll develop critical thinking skills and learn how to question assumptions and explore philosophical ideas in depth. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging and relevant. The course includes tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, expert speakers, and visits to different Oxford colleges. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair to explore future career pathways.
Teaching methodology
Learn through tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will foster self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars (typically 8–10 students). During your course, you will complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will then evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials allow you to discuss your work and receive in-depth feedback from your tutor, while also gaining new perspectives from your classmates. On completion of the course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with influential philosophers such as John Locke, Isaiah Berlin, and Mary Midgley. As part of the 16–17 Philosophy programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by debate, reflection, and new ideas. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its long tradition of intellectual inquiry and culture of questioning that continues to spark curiosity today.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Philosophy challenges students to examine complex ideas about truth, morality, freedom, and what it means to live a good life. In Oxford, students stay in college accommodation and learn in a city shaped by centuries of influential thinkers. With a full programme of social activities and cultural excursions, they gain confidence and independence while exploring ideas alongside new friends from around the world in an academically inspiring environment.
Teaching takes place in small seminar-style groups (up to 10 students), led by expert tutors who tailor sessions to the group’s interests — from ethical dilemmas to the philosophy of mind, language, and politics. Students complete two independent written assignments and receive personalised feedback in focused 1:1 or 2:1 tutorials. They finish the course with stronger reasoning skills, clearer expression of ideas, a certificate of completion, and a personalised tutor recommendation to support their future studies.
