Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Environmental Science is designed for 13–15-year-olds who want to understand the science behind climate change, pollution, and sustainability. Students will explore environmental systems, the human impact on ecosystems, and the political and economic factors shaping global environmental challenges. They’ll examine past and present environmental shifts, assess current strategies for sustainability, and consider what a fair and sustainable future could look like. We don’t follow a fixed curriculum—our tutors tailor the course to the group’s interests, making learning engaging, relevant, and thought-provoking. The course also includes a masterclass on skills like teamwork and collaboration, as well as a reflection session to review personal goals and progress.
Teaching methodology
Learning in small groups (typically around 8–10 students) means you get quality time with your teacher and can ask as many questions as you like. Through interactive learning, our teachers will guide you through new concepts and set practice tasks to help build your knowledge and skills. You’ll also have opportunities for group work, independent research, and homework assignments that are discussed in class. Small class sizes mean everyone has the chance to contribute, and students learn from debating with one another as well as from their tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with pioneering work in environmental research, from studies of ecosystems to global projects on climate change and conservation. As part of the 13–15 Environmental Science programme, your child will live in a city that combines academic heritage with green spaces and natural beauty. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its historic colleges, renowned museums, and nearby parks and rivers that make it a unique place to explore how science helps us understand and protect the world around us.
Accommodation is available in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier chosen. Plus students can choose single or twin, Superior guarantees an ensuite, and Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All options include shared spaces and on-course staff for support.
Meals are provided on a full-board basis, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Students eat in the college dining hall or at local restaurants. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
From climate change to conservation, environmental science looks at the biggest challenges facing our planet — and the exciting solutions that could shape the future. On this course, students explore ecosystems, sustainability, and the science behind human impact through practical investigations and real-world case studies. It’s a chance for curious thinkers to understand how nature works, why it matters, and how science can protect it — building confidence, responsibility, and a passion for our world.
Each weekday includes small seminar-style lessons (maximum 10 students), where expert tutors guide discussion, encourage questioning, and help students think independently about global issues. Afternoons blend teamwork, field-based activities, and investigative projects that connect learning to real environmental problems. With structured social time and strong pastoral support, students grow as communicators and collaborators — leaving with sharper scientific thinking and the belief that they can make a difference.
