Learning
Outline
At Atlas Summer Courses, Chemistry at Atlas Summer Courses for ages 16–17 offers a comprehensive and immersive study experience for those passionate about science. Explore fundamental chemistry topics such as structures, bonding, and organic reactions, and deepen your knowledge with 2:1 tuition from expert tutors. Whether you're studying organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry, the course also allows you to explore your tutor's specialist research areas, ensuring you're equipped with a strong foundation for any future path. We don't follow a fixed curriculum — our tutors tailor the course to the group's interests, making learning engaging and relevant. Throughout the course, you'll engage in tutorial Q&A sessions, an academic skills masterclass, and explore future career pathways with expert speakers. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a university fair and explore the historic city of Oxford as part of the wider programme experience.
Teaching methodology
Learn through our distinctive tutorial-style teaching. Your expert tutor will encourage self-directed learning and critical thinking through interactive small-group seminars of up to 10 students. During your course, you'll complete two pieces of independent work (essays or problem sheets), which your tutor will evaluate in either a 1:1 or 2:1 tutorial. These tutorials give you the opportunity to discuss your work in depth, receive personalised academic feedback, challenge your thinking, and gain new perspectives from your classmates. Together, the seminars and tutorials help you develop the analytical skills, intellectual confidence, and academic independence expected at leading universities. At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from your tutor.
The city of Oxford, with nearly 1,000 years of academic history, has been associated with scientific discovery, including breakthroughs in chemistry that have shaped modern medicine and technology. As part of the 16–17 Chemistry programme, you’ll live in a city shaped by innovation and inquiry. The city of Oxford provides an inspiring backdrop for learning, with its renowned museums, historic setting, and long tradition of experimentation and discovery.
Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, depending on the tier. Plus lets you choose single or twin; Superior guarantees an ensuite; Premier provides concierge-selected rooms. All include shared spaces and on-course staff support.
Meals are half-board (breakfast and dinner), served in college dining halls or selected local restaurants, with students arranging their own lunch. All dietary requirements are catered for.
The Atlas Summer Courses Experience
Chemistry helps us understand the world from the atoms up — powering everything from medical breakthroughs to clean energy and future technology. In Oxford, students investigate the principles behind chemical reactions, molecular structure, and real-world applications, discovering how chemists tackle global challenges like sustainability, materials innovation, and healthcare.
Seminar-style sessions with a maximum of ten students encourage active problem-solving, analysis, and scientific discussion. Independent assignments — supported through personalised tutorial-style feedback — help students strengthen their reasoning and refine the way they communicate scientific ideas. Combined with enrichment activities, cultural experiences, and the chance to live alongside peers from around the world, this course builds confidence, curiosity, and strong foundations for future study in chemistry or related fields. A completion certificate and personalised tutor recommendation support their next academic steps.
